Center officially celebrates 20 years
On Sunday, April 23rd a core group of Center supporters officially celebrated The Center for Respite Care turning 20. We are spending this year paying tribute and remembering people and organizations who have contributed to our success. These have included hospitals, social service organizations, community groups, foundations, individuals, and our co-tenants at The Saint Anthony Center.
20 years ago, we had a vision — with our medical director, Dr. Donovan at the center. Dr. Donovan conveyed thanks and gratitude to attendees at our official celebration.
Our founding was led by Dr. Bob Donovan − and a crew of people who believed that they could collectively treat ill adults experiencing homelessness. This included a healthy return to stable placement. The premise was and is a place to heal, recover and regain footing. Successfully discharging clients from the center meant health, community support, a place to live, and in some cases, stable employment.
After being in private practice for several years − Donovan entered the Society of Mary. Following professional vows in 1988, he returned to Cincinnati and became the medical director of the Cincinnati Health Care for the Homeless Program.
This was a precursor to his vision − the Center for Respite Care, which today is in Over-the-Rhine in the Saint Anthony Center and includes Franciscan Ministries, Mary Magdalen House, St. Francis Seraph Ministries, and Welcome Home Collaborative. Together, we collaboratively serve some of our community’s most vulnerable.
On April 23, we were pleased to announce a full house of clients — meaning that we have filled each bed. Clients were part of our celebration and constructed our table decorations — each adding their individual touches and thoughts.
Importantly, our tribute was reflected by our friends at Channel 12 — Liz Bonis who invited us to her show. (April 16th, what’s happening in health) Liz and Channel 12 have been long-time friends of the Center — including her upcoming return as emcee for the 2023 Transformation Awards.
The Center is about the people we serve, the community in which we operate, and the partners who contribute to our success. Thanks to each of you.
